Project Launch: TAC and CITE Traffic Calming Guide

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

A project to update the Canadian Guide to Neighbourhood Traffic Calming  has been launched by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC).

The project steering committee is being formed and the work will soon get underway.

Published jointly in 1998 by TAC and the Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers (CITE), the Canadian Guide to Neighbourhood Traffic Calming assisted practitioners with understanding traffic calming principles and applications in residential neighbourhoods.  The Guide has been used throughout North America and is considered a success in the field, however the art of traffic calming has evolved and the Guide needs to be updated.

Consultations and workshops with Guide users conducted by CITE helped identify issues that should be addressed in the next edition.

Advanced through TAC’s Traffic Operations and Management Standing Committee and the Chief Engineers’ Council, this joint TAC-CITE project will include:

  • a review of the traffic calming definition and processes of assessing and prioritizing traffic calming requests
  • a review  of available devices, and
  • an update of the design and implementation guidelines  for traffic calming measures

In addition to technical elements, the project will also consider broader issues such as whether the document should be presented as a guide or a recommended practice and whether the focus on “neighbourhood” should be retained. The document structure and format will be reviewed and the opportunity to provide links to other resources and case studies will be considered.

Once completed, the updated Guide will be published in both TAC and CITE’s name.

Project funding partners include Alberta Transportation, British Columbia Transportation and Infrastructure, Nova Scotia Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, Prince Edward Island Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy, le ministère des Transports du Québec, CITE, the Halifax Regional Municipality and the cities of Burlington, Kelowna, London, Ottawa and Saskatoon.
