Sustainability Considerations for Bridges Guide

Wednesday, May 13, 2015

A completed pooled fund project to develop a guide about sustainability considerations for bridges has received support from the Transportation Association of Canada’s (TAC) Chief Engineers’ Council.

Developed under the auspices of the Structures Standing Committee, the Guide provides broad direction on sustainability considerations specific to bridge planning, design, construction and management.

It is intended to:

  • help transportation agencies and bridge professionals improve the sustainable (i.e., social, economic and environmental) benefits of their projects
  • communicate those improvements to stakeholders in a consistent and objective manner

The Guide was developed using the same framework as the TAC Canadian Guide for Greener Roads (2015), and also includes sustainability concepts, objectives and practices. Concepts are supported by twelve objectives which provide direction for improving sustainability of bridge projects and the rationale for understanding specific actions. Over twenty sustainability practices were identified to provide information about specific sustainability subjects that can be considered in a project to achieve one or more sustainability objectives.

MMM Group conducted the work for this project.

A notice will be posted on TAC’s website once the publication and accompanying documents are available for sale in TAC’s Bookstore.

Funding partners for this project include Alberta Transportation, British Columbia Transportation and Infrastructure, Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation, Government of the Northwest Territories, Ontario Ministry of Transportation, le ministère des Transports du Québec, Saskatchewan Highways and Infrastructure, Cement Association of Canada, Structal-Pont and the cities of Calgary, Edmonton, Montréal, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Toronto and Winnipeg.
