Small Municipalities’ Workshop at 2015 TAC Conference

Friday, May 29, 2015

Want to know what it takes to make the roads in your community safer?

Don’t miss the small municipalities’ workshop held as part of the 2015 Transportation Association of Canada’s (TAC) Conference in Charlottetown!

This full-day workshop, entitled Building a Road Safety Action Plan in your Municipality using the 3 E’s (Engineering, Enforcement, and Education), will be held on Wednesday, September 30 at the PEI Convention Centre. Coordinated by TAC’s Small Municipalities’ Task Force and Road Safety Standing Committee, it will consist of a series of presentations, panel discussions and hands-on exercises intended for large and small-sized municipalities, and those who support them.

The morning session will begin with a presentation of speakers’ successes and challenges in municipal road safety planning. Engineering, Enforcement and public Education professionals will demonstrate how each “E” can be integrated into a municipal road safety plan. Examples of the implementation of 3E focused programs in different Canadian cities will also be shared. This will be followed by a group discussion.

Participants will work in groups during the afternoon session.

Some groups will work on a road safety action plan in a larger municipality, where issues are typically associated with:

  • more urbanized areas
  • higher volumes of vehicles, pedestrian and cyclists
  • more frequent collisions
  • more sources of data, and
  • more resources

Other groups will work on a road safety action plan in a smaller municipality, where issues are typically associated with:

  • more rural areas
  • larger road networks
  • greater dispersion of collisions
  • more severe collisions, and
  • less resources

Data will be provided for a selected case study; groups will be invited to build a road safety action plan using the case study as an example, following a list of defined steps.

This workshop is intended to provide the tools for municipalities to take road safety planning to the next level and start working towards a vision of zero fatalities and collisions on our roadways.

Interested individuals are invited to select the workshop when registering for the conference.
