AMEC Environment & Infrastructure, a division of AMEC Americas Limited, has completed its acquisition of Swiss-based engineering company Foster Wheeler AG. The combined company, now known as Amec Foster Wheeler, will expand its global presence in more than 50 countries. Both companies are involved in the oil and gas, and mining and energy sectors, and other areas including infrastructure and environmental services.

Lafarge Canada Inc. C.O.B. has won first place in the grading category of the 2014 BC Transportation and Infrastructure Deputy Minister’s Contractor of the Year Award for the Mufford/64th Avenue Rail Overpass at Highway 10. The new rail overpass is designed to relieve traffic congestion and improve public safety over the 70-kilometre stretch that connects to Roberts Bank, home to Canada’s largest container facility and coal terminal.  Hosted annually by the Road Builders of British Columbia, these awards recognize contractor excellence by honouring them among their peers.

CH2M HILL Canada Limited, who partners with clients in energy, water, environment and infrastructure to design integrated solutions, was awarded a contract to study the feasibility of a fixed link between Gabriola Island and Vancouver Island that would replace existing ferry service. This study is in response to a petition signed by a significant number of Gabriola Island residents, and is consistent with government’s goals of both connecting coastal communities in a sustainable manner and finding innovative ways to reduce the upward pressure on coastal ferry fares.

International Road Dynamics Inc. (IRD), a highway traffic management technology company specializing in supplying products and systems to the intelligent transportation systems industry, was granted a CAD $9.5 million contract for the design, supply, installation and integration of 19 mainline weigh-in-motion systems at various locations throughout the State of Georgia.

The Ottawa Airport Parkway Pedestrian/Cycling Bridge opened to pedestrian and cyclist traffic in late November of 2014. The City of Ottawa hired Parsons, an engineering company delivering design/design-build, program and construction management, to fully redesign the footbridge that provides a safe east-west connection over a major transportation artery for the Ottawa International Airport. Parsons’ cable-stayed bridge design includes LED lighting and a series of 14 cables—sheathed in white—supporting the orthotropic steel deck.
