Confederation Bridge Workshop at 2015 TAC Conference

Monday, June 29, 2015

The longest bridge in the world across ice-covered waters, the 13-km Confederation Bridge, was constructed in only 18 months at a cost of $1 billion.

Held as part of the 2015 upcoming Transportation Association of Canada’s (TAC) Conference in Charlottetown, this September 29 half-day workshop will cover topics related to the ongoing serviceability of this impressive transportation structure, including:

  • Role of the Independent Engineer during the Concession Period
  • Pier Tiltmeter System
  • Estimating the Service Life of the Waterproofing System
  • Bridge Deformations
  • Durability Monitoring
  • Dynamic Movements of the Confederation Bridge

Presented by TAC’s Structures Standing Committee, the workshop will adopt an open forum discussion with a question and answer period. Presentations will discuss the original design team’s assumptions for the 100-year design life, and examine data acquisition from various monitoring stations and test locations supporting these assumptions.

Participants will gain insight into material and structural behavior for projects subjected to harsh environmental conditions.

Interested individuals are invited to select the workshop when registering for the conference.

In addition to the workshop, a technical tour of the Confederation Bridge will be offered on Monday, September 28. Participants will be allowed to enter the structure and view some of the bridge instrumentation. Technical tours must also be selected during the conference registration process.
