Urban Transportation Projects Approved for Publication

Monday, November 16, 2015

Reports from three recently-completed projects were approved by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC)’s Urban Transportation Council at the 2015 Fall Meetings.

The publications that result from the following projects will be made available by TAC over the course of the coming months. Notices regarding their release will be sent to TAC members and posted on the website.

Design and Implementation of Public Transit Services – Guidelines for Communities

Advanced by the Transportation Planning and Research Standing Committee, this document is intended for use by planners, decision makers and other stakeholders in communities that either have public transportation in place or are contemplating public transportation for the first time.

The guidelines will help municipalities prepare and implement a transit service development plan for existing and future land use patterns which considers financial capacity, and meets the access and mobility needs of its residents.  The document also includes land use strategies to support the development and utilization of public transit investments.

Moving Smarter – Exploring Solutions for Canadian Cities

This project, completed under the auspices of the Sustainable Transportation Standing Committee, examined all major modes of urban transportation addressed through municipal or regional transportation and land use planning processes and policies, focusing on light duty and heavy duty vehicles, public transit and active transportation.

The project findings will help municipalities and regional agencies understand available options for reducing energy consumed for transportation and associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

A detailed literature review of international scope regarding various options for energy consumption and GHG reduction related to transportation, an examination and compilation of existing programs, real experiences, options, and lessons learned have been consolidated into this practical report.

Urban Transportation Indicators 5th Survey

Building on four previous surveys, the 5th Urban Transportation Indicators (UTI) survey aims to complete a consistent and reliable database on urban transportation, and develop indicators for Canadian municipalities and transportation stakeholders.

Advanced by the Transportation Planning and Research Standing Committee, the survey provides an important picture of transportation behaviour and trends in Canadian urban areas.

The UTI Survey Database will integrate data from all five surveys. A technical report will be published, in both English and French, to accompany the database. A briefing will also be prepared which provides an overview of the project and survey results.
