Parking Control Updates: Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

Volunteer Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) projects were recently completed about parking control at loading zones and multi-panel parking sign assembly.

As a result of the work, completed under the auspices of the Traffic Operations and Management Standing Committee (TOMSC), updates to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC) will be issued.

Parking Control Signs at Loading Zones

A family of pictogram-based signs to advise drivers of the parking restrictions that apply to a section of street and the type of loading activities that are allowed as exceptions in that area will be added to the MUTCDC.  Commercial, general public or passenger loading zone signs will be included in a new subsection in the parking control section of the regulatory signs division.

Guidelines for Multi-Panel Parking Sign Assembly

Many municipalities across Canada use multiple panel displays for parking control.  Although guidance for such signage is provided in the MUTCDC, it is currently limited to three-panel displays.  In the absence of guidance for displays with more panels, there have been different approaches used by jurisdictions across Canada.

A new sign assembly will be added to the MUTCDC to address parking control regulations that exceed three panels.  Two alternative arrangements are identified: modules on separate sign plates or modules on one sign plate. The MUTCDC update will indicate that the order of priority on the panels should progress from most restrictive (no stopping) to least restrictive (seasonal parking restrictions).

MUTCDC updates will be prepared by the Editing and Publication Subcommittee.  A release date has not been determined at this time.
