Consider Supporting TAC’s Pooled-Fund Projects

August 14, 2025

Every pooled-fund project of the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) is enabled financially by a group of partner organizations that also direct and oversee the work.

TAC is now seeking partners for nine projects—three of which are new additions since the spring. For more details, click on a project’s name in the list below, or contact us to talk about getting your organization involved.

Mobility Council Projects

Active Transportation Facilities at Interchanges: Synthesis of Practice (65% funded) →

This project will identify opportunities and challenges related to the provision of safe and attractive facilities for walking and cycling at interchanges. It will document effective network planning, geometric design and traffic control practices to minimize conflicts and support active transportation.

Infrastructure & Asset Management Council Projects

Estimating Utility Relocation Costs (41% funded) →

This project will help road authorities understand the costs of relocating dry utilities throughout a road project. Based on research and consultation, it will recommend a methodology for estimating costs that can be incorporated into a future online tool.

Guide to Bridge Traffic and Combination Barriers, Second Edition (45% funded) →

This update to TAC’s 2010 guide will identify design considerations for climate resilience and mixed-use scenarios. It will also update other recommended methods and procedures for bridge barrier design, construction, inspection, evaluation, repair and rehabilitation.

Low-Carbon Road Infrastructure: Opportunities for Canada (47% funded) →

This project will evaluate and prioritize practices to reduce life-cycle carbon emissions from road infrastructure materials and processes. Its major themes will include asset management, construction, maintenance and operations, pavement design and management, soils and materials and structures.

Transportation Asset Management Practices in Canada (NEW) →

This project will describe the current state of asset management practices in Canada, as they relate to pavements, transportation structures, auxiliary structures, and geotechnical assets. It will compare major parameters of transportation asset management programs and draw conclusions about beneficial practices and strategies.

Bridge Deck Joints: Synthesis of Practice (NEW) →

This project will evaluate existing practices for bridge deck joint design, fabrication, construction, operation and maintenance. These findings will be documented in a report identifying notable practices and lessons learned to aid with bridge deck joint details and performance.

Bridge Design Guide for Low-Volume Roads (NEW) →

This project will explore current practices for single structures and large bundled replacement projects, define risks by discipline and site factors, and create a performance-based design framework. It will also outline procurement and contracting approaches as it reaches its end goal of a consolidated guide to low-volume road bridge design in Canada.

Safety, Design & Operations Council Projects

Canadian Roundabout Design Guide, Second Edition (43% funded) →

This update to TAC’s Canadian Roundabout Design Guide (2017) will give detailed consideration to pedestrian and cyclist accommodation at roundabouts. Other topics will include large vehicles, fastest paths, and turbo roundabouts.

Technology Council Projects

Micro-Utility Devices in Public Rights-of-Way (46% funded) →

This project will consider how micro-utility devices (MUDs, also called public-area mobile robots, surface robots or sidewalk robots) could be used safely where members of the public may be present. It will help Canada’s municipal, provincial and federal governments understand the public and private sector use cases for MUDs, along with the associated benefits and risks.
