Montreal Tackles the SPaT Challenge

The Ville de Montréal is actively working towards a future of connected vehicles. As a participant in the North America-wide SPaT Challenge, the city has been improving its infrastructure to support the deployment of V2I (vehicle-to-infrastructure) communications and pilot projects using signal phase and timing (SPaT) data. This webinar gave an overview of recent upgrades to Montréal’s traffic control system, the broadcast of SPaT data using the MQTT protocol, the development of a smart corridor along Notre-Dame Boulevard, and the operation of an autonomous shuttle pilot project.

Mohamed worked in electrical, automation and software design engineering before joining the Ministère des Transports du Quèbec in 2012, where he worked on the engineering design and deployment of ITS projects. Since 2018 he has worked on traffic control, electrical systems and V2I systems engineering design for the Ville de Montréal.

Jonathan Hamel-Nunes, ing. – ITS and Traffic Control Systems Section Manager, Ville de Montréal

Jonathan joined the Ville de Montréal’s team responsible for traffic signal deployment in 2013. Today, he leads traffic signal and intelligent transportation systems groups as they face upcoming challenges including governance, 5G deployment, and the development of vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications.
