End of School and Playground Zone Signs

Wednesday, February 17, 2016

End of school and playground zone signs will be updated in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC) as a result of a Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) volunteer project.

The project was completed under the auspices of the Traffic Operations and Management Standing Committee.

The End of School Zone and End of Playground Zone signs are used on local roads in residential areas to advise motorists that they may resume travelling at normal speed at the end of the zone, as referenced in TAC’s School and Playground Areas and Zones: Guidelines for Application and Implementation (2006). The guidelines are intended to support and supplement the MUTCDC.

The signs are used in some Canadian jurisdictions; a survey was conducted to identify existing practices across the country with respect to the placement and implementation of these signs. As a result, a supplementary ends tab sign will be added to the School Area (WC-1) or Playground Area (WC-3) sign in the MUTCDC. The tab sign will indicate the end of the zone or area on residential urban and rural roads where a speed limit reduction has not been implemented in the vicinity of a school or playground.

The Editing and Publication Subcommittee will prepare the required update to the MUTCDC.
