The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has named Cruickshank Construction Limited Paver of the Year for 2014. The award, handed out at the Ontario Road Builders’ Association’s annual conference on February 10, recognizes excellence in workmanship on a hot-mix paving project completed in 2014. The company was chosen for its work on the Napanee stretch of Highway 401, a multi-year project completed in the fall of 2014.
McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. has received the top award in the Design and Contract Preparation Roads category at the 11th annual British Columbia Deputy Minister’s Consulting Engineers Awards. The Vancouver firm was awarded a $1-million contract to create a design and tender package for the Malahat Safety Improvement Project. The design involved widening 2.3 kilometres of Highway 1 from Shawnigan Lake Road to the Malahat Summit to accommodate median barriers, extend passing lanes, improve intersections, and provide better access to and from the Summit Rest Area. These awards recognize technical excellence in consulting engineering services that improve transportation infrastructure in B.C.
The University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Engineering has named E3-3113 Room, The Ralph Haas Infrastructure and Sensing Analysis Laboratory. “I am delighted the University is able to show its appreciation of Ralph’s enormous achievements in the field of pavement and transportation technology by naming this laboratory in his honour”, said Pearl Sullivan, Dean of Engineering. Ralph Haas, distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Waterloo, is one of three academics to have been named Honourary Life Member of the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC). Ralph received a Distinguished Alumni Award by the University of Alberta last September for his role in developing and implementing systems, concepts and technologies for managing networks of paved roads. This award recognizes living graduates whose outstanding achievements have earned them national or international prominence.
