Planning, Budgeting and Efficiently Maintain Ageing Infrastructure and ITS Devices

Planning, budgeting and efficiently maintaining ageing infrastructure and ITS devices’ obsolescence is a universal challenge at all levels of Public Sector Transportation and/or Infrastructure departments. Ensuring the effective use of networks of deployed sensors, ingesting third-party data sources (weather, road conditions, OEM data, etc.), visibility of the network via the cameras installed across the roadway, disseminating the accurate information in real-time to travelers through media, social media, 511, message signs, and diverting traffic has direct effects on the safety of drivers and congestion on the network.

This presentation will take the audience on a journey from tools to assess the current state of roadside digital/ technology assets (e.g. ITS, etc.), prioritizing maintenance decisions, managing necessary repairs and maintenance, how that data flows through to the Traffic Management Centre, and finally how the cycle repeats for new investments to be assessed. It will show how a data rich platform can support short- and long-term planning and decisions.

About the presenters:

Jonathan Darton, Mobile Applications Technology Director, has over 20 years’ experience in Intelligent System design, development, and implementation. Jonathan has been actively engaged with stakeholders for many Mobile, ITS, TMC and systems related projects including ATMS, ATIS, Data Acquisition, and Data Warehousing systems. Jonathan manages Arcadis’ Global Mobile Development team, providing solutions to clients internationally.

Neena Soans, Traffic and Asset Management Portfolio Director, leads Arcadis’ Intelligent Solutions practice in Florida and is the solution portfolio lead for the company’s traffic management and asset management solutions. Neena has 23 years of ITS software planning, specification, design, development, deployment and operations experience, and 15 years of program and product development experience.

Transporting Used Nuclear Fuel in Canada – a key element in NWMO’s successful siting process for Canada’s Deep Geological Repository

In 2024, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) took a historic step by selecting a site for a deep geological repository to house Canada’s used nuclear fuel. This decision to site a deep geological repository in northwestern Ontario with Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation (WLON) and the Township of Ignace as two host communities was based on over 15 years of work with industry, government and many communities involved in the siting process. This is a significant step forward for Canada, and with it come many questions.

1)    Why does Canada need a deep geological repository?
2)    How will the used nuclear fuel be transported?
3)    Is it safe to transport used nuclear fuel?

This presentation will provide a brief history of the NWMO’s siting decision, answer commonly asked questions and describe how engagement on transportation played a significant role in identifying a site for Canada’s deep geological repository.

About the presenters:

Caitlin Burley, Director of Transportation for the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, Canada, is responsible for developing and implementing NWMO’s transportation engagement program. This program ensures that people have access to fact-based information about the transportation of used nuclear fuel and that the NWMO’s technical programs are reflective of public priorities and questions. Caitlin has a Masters of Applied Science in Environmental Management, and accreditation from the International Association for Public Participation on consultation and dialogue.

Ulf Stahmer is a Senior Transportation Engineer for the NWMO. As a mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Waterloo, Ulf spent the first decade of his career in the railroad industry designing brakes for trains. For the past 25 years, Ulf has held senior engineering positions in radioactive waste transport for both Ontario Power Generation and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization. Two years ago, Ulf moved to become part of the NWMO’s public engagement team to provide technical expertise. He has a broad understanding of both the repository project, and road and rail transport, and is passionate about sharing his knowledge.

The Importance of BIM for Linear Infrastructure: Enabling digital twins through design

WSP is at the forefront of transforming the design, construction and maintenance of linear infrastructure. As an industry leader in design and asset management, WSP collaborates with clients who are seeking to leverage emerging technologies for the administration and preservation of their linear assets. Digital Twins and Building Information Modeling (BIM) are frequently cited solutions to the industry’s challenges, but how do they integrate, and what value do they offer to the sector? Attendees will gain insights into how WSP’s approaches the development BIM and Digital Twins for Infrastructure clients.

About the presenters:

Joel Inkster, Senior Principal Business Strategy Analyst, Bridges Highways and Roads, has 20 years of experience in BIM and Digital Engineering at WSP, working with clients, designers, and contractors in the UK and Canada. He is the design BIM lead on the Ontario Line Elevated Guideway and was Head of Digital and Information Management with National Highway’s Smart Motorways Alliance.

Keith Anthon, Technical Director, Rail & Transit, has an MSc. in Project Management, over 30 years of experience, and excels in Digital Information Management, BIM, and Design. He leads large teams on international projects, implementing BIM and Digital Twins, and is passionate about digitization and carbon-neutral goals.
