Reporting to the Leader, Transportation and Open Space, as the Senior Transportation Engineer, you will lead the early-stage planning and conceptual development of major multi-modal transportation infrastructure projects. These include Functional Planning Studies, Corridor Studies, and the integration of open space and public realm concepts. This role is essential to advancing city-wide mobility, accessibility, and livability goals. Primary duties Include:
- Lead the development of business cases for major transportation projects, including scope definition, budgeting, and resource planning.
- Manage procurement processes and consultant contracts to ensure high-quality, timely, and cost-effective project delivery.
- Conduct and oversee multi-modal transportation planning studies, integrating land use, urban design, and public realm considerations.
- Evaluate existing transportation networks and develop alternative concepts and preferred plans based on technical analysis and input from interested parties.
- Facilitate collaboration across City departments, external agencies, and community interest holders to align project objectives.
- Represent the City in public engagement sessions, interdepartmental workshops, and Council presentations.
- Provide technical mentorship to junior staff and contribute to continuous improvement in planning practices.
- Oversee and contribute to highway design components of transportation projects, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and best practices.
- Utilize CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation) to support design development, review, and coordination of transportation infrastructure plans.
Qualifications
- A degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field and at least 7 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. - Experience must include leading functional planning and corridor studies, managing consultant teams and complex project scopes, presenting to senior leadership and Council, applying transportation modeling, design, and evaluation tools, coordinating with internal and external interest holders, and navigating political and regulatory environments.
- Demonstrated experience in highway and roadway design, including familiarity with applicable design standards and guidelines is essential.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation), as well as in Microsoft Office and transportation planning and design software (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM, GIS tools) is essential.
- The successful candidate will have strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
