Abstract | As global communities respond to COVID-19, we've heard from public health officials that the same type of aggregated, anonymized insights we use in products such as Google Maps could be helpful as they make critical decisions to combat COVID-19. These Community Mobility Reports aim to provide insights into what has changed in response to policies aimed at combating COVID-19. The reports chart movement trends over time by geography, across different categories of places such as retail and recreation, groceries and pharmacies, parks, transit stations, workplaces, and residential. |

Abstract | With fewer cars on the road during the COVID-19 pandemic, one councillor is proposing an idea to get more Edmontonians out for fresh air while maintaining a physical distance: turning roads into sidewalks. Governments and health officials are asking Canadians to stay home to prevent more spread of the novel coronavirus. However, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, is recommending walks and exercise as an essential way to stay healthy, physically and mentally, during the pandemic, as long as that physical distance is kept. |

Abstract | Governments around the world are responding to an outbreak of COVID-19, or Coronavirus, a new respiratory disease that has spread to multiple countries, including Canada. The Canadian transit industry has learned a lot about managing a pandemic-type crisis since SARS and H1N1 – two past global viruses – and how important it is to communicate to staff and customers early, openly and frequently. It’s important to work with public health officials to keep up-to-date as the situation evolves. Many systems are using their passenger display screens to remind people of the best ways to prevent transmission, sometimes co-branded with offices of public health. As the situation develops rapidly, CUTA is stepping in to provide our members with context and information on COVID-19 management. The resources below provide guidance on best practices for public transit operators during a pandemic. |

Abstract | The City of Vernon is making changes to downtown traffic signals as part of its response to COVID-19, in order to reduce high touch points in the community. Starting today (March 30), pedestrian 'walk' phases at intersections located on 30Avenue, 32 Avenue, and 35 Avenue will happen automatically with no need to press a button. No changes will be made to traffic signals on Highway 97 (32 Street), so pedestrians will need to continue to press the button in order to cross the highway. |

Abstract | Governments have a solemn responsibility to ensure the health and well-being of the populations they govern. The COVID-19 pandemic reveals just how serious governments take this responsibility and that restricting activity to limit pathogen spread can have other public health repercussions. Comparisons between February 2019 and 2020 air quality measures reveal that six cities that were impacted early by government restrictions in response to COVID-19 show consistent declines in five of six major air pollutants. Given that air pollution causes more than four million premature deaths annually, the declines in air pollution in response to activity changes confirm that governments have the capability to improve air quality through policy change. |

Abstract | Over the past few weeks, people all around the world have been asked to drastically change their day-to-day behaviors in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Social (or physical) distancing has been encouraged, and increasingly this distancing is enforced through stay-at-home orders and the closure of gathering places like businesses, museums, large event spaces, and parks. This event and the resulting economic effects will influence travel behavior due to changes in origins, destinations, modes, and routes. Since the way that policymakers respond to the crisis will play a considerable role in shaping the success or struggle of various transportation service providers, it’s important for them to consider how individuals might shift their transportation behaviors as a result of the pandemic. |

Abstract | A new AASHTO survey of state DOTs is forecasting a $50 billion cut in revenue over the next 18 months that is already putting construction projects and people’s paychecks in jeopardy. In this edition of On Time with Tymon, learn from AASHTO’s Executive Director Jim Tymon, just how serious this national crisis is. America’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a nearly 50% reduction in motor vehicle travel nationwide. For state DOTs that translates into a 30% drop in revenues. In letters to Congress, state DOT leaders are telling lawmakers what’s happening in their states. AASHTO is advocating for the same kind of emergency economic relief Congress has already provided to airports, commercial airlines and public transit agencies, be given directly to state DOTs. “We’re already seeing state DOTs furloughing employees and delaying projects and without immediate assistance from Congress you’re going to see more and more states facing these decisions,” Tymon says in the video. Abstract | The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) is proud to partner with WSP USA, Inc. and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in creating “The COVID-19 Pandemic: Public Transportation Responds: Safeguarding Riders and Employees.” APTA’s responsibility is to help public transit agencies and business members recover, reinvent, and re-boot for a future that is safer and more resilient. Toward that goal, this guide is more than a resource tool of best practices and policies; it represents who we are as public transportation leaders, not just what we do. Keeping our riders and employees safe has always been a core value for every APTA member. By providing vital answers to some of the most vexing questions regarding COVID-19, this guide will help transit agencies to continue delivering essential services safely and to emerge from the pandemic stronger. |

Abstract | If you work in the transportation industry, you probably have a plan for the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). After all, part of the service you provide depends on the ability to keep people safe and healthy regardless of their travel plans. A growing list of airlines and governments have banned flights from China. Fortunately airports, airlines, first responders, and local health officials are already working in tandem to establish response strategies, effective practices, and clear communication to successfully combat the challenges of travel and disease. Their collaborations have improved prevention, preparedness, and response efforts. |

Abstract | COVID-19 has had a profound impact on supply chains for many different critical products, both in the United States and worldwide. The pandemic has created major changes in freight flows and has challenged the ability to deliver products to companies and consumers within the needed time frame. This has perhaps most acutely become an issue an issue for both medical supplies and food delivery. TRB is hosting a webinar on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, from 2:00 to 3:30 PM Eastern that will explore the impacts of COVID-19 on the supply chain and logistics industries. Presenters will discuss lessons learned from past freight transportation and supply chain disruptions, identify research that has been done to address resilience in the supply chain, describe how to mitigate the economic impacts of these disruptions, and provide commentary on current supply chain disruptions due to COVID-19. Abstract | How can the transportation industry deal with and manage the COVID-19 outbreak? TRB is hosting a webinar on Monday, March 23 from 2:00 to 3:30 PM Eastern that will identify a holistic approach transportation and health agencies may take to contain and manage the outbreak. Addressing decision-making challenges in disease response in the transportation context is a multi-dimensional task, involving not only transportation and transit organizations, but health organizations, emergency management agencies, and communications outlets as well. Presenters will discuss their experience with other outbreaks such as H1N1 (2009 – a.k.a. “swine flu”) and Avian Influenza. They will identify challenges COVID-19 has presented in their transportation systems and what their agencies are doing to adapt and mitigate risks for those at greatest risk of contracting the illness. Presenters will also discuss what can be done today to enhance the resiliency of our transportation systems at risk of future similar disease outbreaks. There is no fee to attend this webinar.
