Abstract | Today, Mayor John Tory announced that a City of Toronto staff report scheduled for consideration by City Council later this week proposes that key parts of the cycling network be expanded, through accelerated installation of routes in the council-approved Cycling Network Plan, as part of the ActiveTO program. During the April 30 Toronto City Council meeting, staff were requested to look at more active transportation as a crucial part of the city’s COVID-19 restart and recovery and in anticipation of changes in traffic patterns. The report released today asks Council to approve the installation of approximately 25 kilometres of new bikeways, for a total of approximately 40 kilometres of on-street cycling lanes approved for accelerated installation in 2020. Abstract | Coronavirus and the City: One Question is an initiative of the University of Toronto’s School of Cities We are launching this series with the understanding that COVID-19 presents cities with a host of serious challenges, while at the same time raising critical questions about our urban future. Although COVID-19 is primarily a public health challenge, no element of urban life appears untouched by the pandemic. This series presents a way for the School of Cities to collaborate on the city’s eventual recovery. Each week, we will ask urban leaders representing academia, government, industry, community, and civil society to respond to one key question designed to draw out multiple perspectives. And as cities embark on the return to some version of normal, we will leverage the series to learn about building resiliency. Through this initiative, we will investigate ways for cities to not only protect citizens’ health, but also maintain economic vitality and social vibrancy. |

Abstract | The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is affecting communities worldwide. Its effects on mobility patterns and habits have been diverse and, at times, unpredictable. What’s more, both the situation and its consequences are changing swiftly. Many local governments have responded skilfully, demonstrating resilience and the ability to keep people and things moving. Sustainable urban mobility is often central to their response. At the same time, COVID-19 has undeniably affected the functioning of existing mobility systems and people’s ability to move freely. In the blog series “On the Move in Times of Change”, CIVTAS cities reflect on how they are responding to COVID-19 and the constantly evolving mobility landscape. |

Abstract | Guelph is making temporary road and sidewalk changes at seven locations so people walking and cycling can stay 2 metres apart. “These temporary sidewalk and road changes will create more space for physical distancing while also allowing people to get out and get active,” explains Kealy Dedman, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Infrastructure, Development and Enterprise Services. “We ask community members to be patient and kind to their fellow road users as we try these new ways of physical distancing during our new normal.” |

In a resolution to be tabled at Monday's city council meeting, Bill Mauro also asks administration to "include recommendations to close suitable streets or surface parking lots that continue to ensure that the flow of pedestrian traffic is not disrupted, and that accessible parking spaces are maintained" in the report, which is due back in June. |

Abstract | If physical distancing measures in Ontario are relaxed too much or too quickly, the province could see hospitals overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients as well as exponential growth in deaths, concludes new research involving a University of Guelph infectious disease modeller. The findings, contained in a research letter published in Annals of Internal Medicine, suggest that if Ontarians increase their contacts to normal levels in the coming weeks, the virus will quickly spread and result in cases exceeding hospital ICU (intensive care unit) capacity. |
