TAC Releases Canadian Model Rules of the Road

Jeudi, 19 Avril, 2018

The Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) has released Canadian Model Rules of the Road, 2018 edition, as a free download.

The publication presents a generic set of traffic rules that road users must know and observe while using the road system. This replaces the 1996 edition, and serves as a reference guide for professionals responsible for preparing legislation which governs the use of Canadian roadway facilities, and practitioners responsible for implementing traffic control devices.

Sandra Majkic, Technical Programs Director, says the model rules will help practitioners understand how road users are expected to respond to various traffic control measures. Among the various elements included are traffic control devices, passing, use of roadway, lanes, headway, right of way, pedestrians, turns, driver signals, special stops, speed restrictions, parking, alternate vehicles, bicycles, transit and other provisions.

As this is a generic set of rules, there may be exceptions to the rules presented depending on the jurisdiction. Individual jurisdictions may consider their own values based on local practices.

The Canadian Model Rules of the Road was developed with funding by: Alberta Transportation; Saskatchewan Highways and Infrastructure; City of Ottawa; Ministry of Transportation of Ontario; Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation; Ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l’Électrification des transports du Québec; and Transport Canada.
