Using Future Climate Data to Design Resilient Transportation Infrastructure

The historical climate data used to design Canada’s roads and bridges do not account for future changes in temperature, wind and precipitation that could increase their risk of failure and service disruption. We need updated codes, standards, and guidelines for infrastructure design and management that consider climate change.

This webinar will provide an overview of the Climate-Resilient Buildings and Core Public Infrastructure initiative of the National Research Council (NRC). Topics will include the changing climate, forcing scenarios, climate models, and the future climatic data and loads that are needed to design climate-resilient transportation infrastructure.

Dr. Zoubir Lounis, National Research Council Canada

Dr. Zoubir Lounis is a Principal Research Officer in the NRC’s Sustainable & Resilient Infrastructure & Communities group in the Construction Research Centre. His research involves risk-based design and management of bridge infrastructure, structural concrete design and rehabilitation, and sustainability and resilience of critical infrastructure. He is the recipient of the ASCE Ernest E. Howard Award, ASCE T.Y. Lin Award, and CSCE Award of Excellence.  He is a member of TAC’s Structures Committee, Climate Change Integrated Committee, Infrastructure & Asset Management Council, and the Technical Committee of Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code.

Dr. Hamidreza Shirkhani, National Research Council Canada

Dr. Hamidreza Shirkhani is a Research Officer in the NRC’s Sustainable & Resilient Infrastructure & Communities group in the Construction Research Centre. His expertise and research involves infrastructure resiliency, climate modeling, climate change impact studies and water resources engineering. Dr. Shirkhani serves as a CSA technical committee member for the development of new and updated Canadian standards, is an adjunct professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa and Queen's University, and is an Associate Editor for the journal Frontiers in Water.
