The Specialist supports the implementation of the City’s active transportation (walking/cycling/micromobility) network by providing expertise and consulting with stakeholders and the public in the planning, design and implementation of active transportation infrastructure. Drawing from the requirements of the Vaughan Transportation Plan and the Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan, the Specialist will inform the designs of sidewalks and cycling/micromobility facilities, both mid-block and at intersections, for retrofit, reconstruction and new development projects. It is expected that the Specialist will comment on engineering drawings and design/specification documents for various City and third-party led studies and assignments, to ensure coordinated and consistent implementation of design standards and approaches across Vaughan. In addition, to encourage the use of active transportation, this position will be involved in the City’s on-going education and outreach activities with the public. Ultimately, the Specialist will endeavor to plan, design, implement and encourage the use of safe, effective and convenient active transportation facilities for all users.
Qualifications |
• Three (3) year College Diploma in Engineering (Civil, Transportation, Active transportation or related engineering field of study) or University Degree in Engineering or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a transportation engineering environment preferably with active transportation engineering design and construction experience. • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) OR/ • Registered Professional Planner (RPP) OR/ • Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) •Knowledge of methods and technologies related to design and construction of transportation preferably active transportation infrastructure, including reading and interpreting site plans, engineering drawings, specifications and constructability. •Excellent knowledge of transportation engineering industry standards, trends, emerging technologies and applicable legislative requirements specifically as it applies to active transportation and micromobility. Well-versed in Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM) Book 18: Cycling facilities, OTM Book 12A: Bicycle Traffic Signals, National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) design guidelines and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) design and accessibility. •Knowledge of the Environmental Assessment Act, the Planning Act and other related government, labour, employment and human rights legislation. •Knowledge and understanding of transportation and urban planning principles and the interrelationship between transportation and land use. •Proficiency with specialized computer software applications and techniques for design and analysis work in the field of transportation engineering. •Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey technical analysis, methodologies and results to a non-technical audience. •Ability to work effectively with members of Council, staff, stakeholders, consultants, contractors, developers and the public. •Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment. •Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in the City’s core and relevant functional competencies. •Valid Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s license in good standing and reliable vehicle to utilize on corporate business. |
