The continued growth of cycling in Canada is leading to the development of infrastructure that better serves the safety and mobility needs of cyclists. A new report from the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) will help practitioners evaluate the potential safety performance of new facilities for cycling.
Safety Performance of Bicycle Infrastructure in Canada is a resource document that characterizes the safety performance of different types of linear bicycle facilities and intersection treatments. It integrates the results of a literature review, local and international case studies, and jurisdictional and end-user surveys. The publication identifies issues to consider when selecting bicycle facilities and intersection treatments, and identifies a series of gaps in the understanding of bicycle infrastructure safety.
“This project is a great example of TAC members working together to build knowledge and improve the safety of all road users,” said Sarah Wells, TAC’s Executive Director. “It has been a truly national effort, with funding and technical guidance from nine local or regional agencies, four provinces, the federal government, a public insurance provider, a national non-profit organization, and one business.”
