TAC Executive Committee Endorses Three New Projects in Development

Friday, June 10, 2016

The Transportation Association of Canada (TAC)’s Executive Committee has endorsed three new projects in development recommended by the Chief Engineers’ Council, and the Urban Transportation Council in April 2016.

Organizations interested in participating as project partners in either of these three projects, or any other project in development should contact Sandra Majkic.

1.       Best Practices for Evaluating Soil and Material Stabilization Projects

Advanced by the Soils and Materials Standing Committee of the Chief Engineers’ Council, this project would produce a synthesis of best practices for evaluating soil and material stabilization treatments in Canada, and guidelines to help Canadian agencies evaluate and select appropriate stabilization products leading to long-term performance of roadways.

Key tasks would include:

  • A literature review of typical soil stabilization practices, including an overview of stabilization products available on the Canadian market;
  • A survey of Canadian agencies, industry, product suppliers, contractors and geotechnical experts to determine pertinent issues related to stabilization practices and treatments; and
  • A review of research on available soil stabilization treatments and associated performance throughout North America, and internationally.

2.       Best Practices for Pothole Repairs in Canada

This project, also recommended by the Soils and Materials Standing Committee, would develop a synthesis of best practices for pothole repairs in Canada, recommending appropriate temporary and long-term patching strategies, and patching products leading to long-term performance of roadways.

Key tasks would include:

  • A literature and research review of typical causes of pothole occurrences and appropriate repair strategies;
  • A survey of Canadian agencies, industry, product suppliers, and contractors to determine pertinent issues related to pothole repairs practices; and
  • The development of a synthesis of best practices.

3.       Strategic Opportunities for Integrating Health and Transportation

Initiated by the Transportation Planning and Research Standing Committee of the Urban Transportation Council, this project would produce guidelines identifying gaps and provide recommendations for strengthening the integration between health and transportation.

Key tasks would include:

  • A review of various jurisdictions and/or organizations’ best practices in addressing health implications associated with transportation, including any relevant documents, standards and designs that have been developed;
  • Recommendations and guidance to address identified gaps and strengthen the integration between health and transportation; and
  • Consulting with health and transportation professionals to advance this initiative.
