2018 TAC Student Paper Awards

The Transportation Association of Canada is proud to announce our Student Award recipients for 2018.  

The winners will be honoured at our next Annual Conference to be held in Saskatoon at TCU Place September 30 to October 3, 2018.

Each year, TAC offers Student Paper Awards to student in accredited Transportation associated programs. The award recognizes outstanding accomplishments, technical merit and writing ability.

1st Place – Student Paper Award

TAC would like to congratulate the winner of the 2018 TAC Conference Student Paper Competition, Eskedil Melese for his paper entitled, Effects of Blended Cements on Strength and Durability of Full-Depth Reclaimed Pavement Materials. The paper explores the effects of various blended cements on the strength and durability of full-depth reclaimed pavement materials. Eskedil will be addressing delegates during his presentation at the Testing and Modeling on Road and Embankment Materials SMSC Session on Tuesday, October 2.

Eskedil was born and raised in Ethiopia. He got his BSc degree in Civil Engineering from Arba Minch University, Ethiopia in 2005. He did his masters degree in Road and Transportation Engineering at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia in 2014.  He had been working at a consulting firm for ten years before joining University of Waterloo as a PhD candidate in 2016. During his tenure as a pavement/materials engineer he had got involved in many road design and construction supervision projects in various echelons spanning from Laboratory Technician to Department Director.

2nd Place – Student Paper Award

At this years’ conference, TAC will recognize two (2) second place winners, Laura Stasiuk and Ali Al-Abbasi for their papers entitled Evaluating the Performance of Tack Coat Materials in Saskatchewan Climate and Non-Destructive Testing for Optimizing Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation. Both Laura and Ali are proud to have the opportunity to present to Conference delegates. Laura will be presenting at the Monday, October 1 SMSC Session: Testing and Modeling on Road and Embankment Matrieals and Ali will be addressig delegates during the Tuesday, October 2 PVSC Session: Innovations in Pavement Management, Engineering and Technologies.

The Student Paper Awards are possible thanks to the commitment and support of the volunteer council members participating on the Education Human Resources Development Council. With the council’s support, Award recipients are awarded $500 for the student placing first and $300 for student(s) placing second.  The winners also receive free registration to the annual conference (in the year of award) and recognition at the Annual Awards Student Day Tuesday Luncheon.

Applications have closed for 2018. Next application period will begin in the Fall of 2018.
