New Electric Vehicle Charging Station Sign Approved

Friday, August 8, 2014

A directional sign to lead drivers to a charging station for electric vehicles has been approved following a Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) volunteer project.

The Traffic Operations and Management Standing Committee (TOMSC) reviewed new and existing sign options currently being used in some Canadian jurisdictions.  Based on research and comprehension testing, the adopted sign uses a pictogram of a fuel pump with the letters “EV” (electric vehicle) or, in French,  “VE” (véhicule électrique) with a cable and a two-prong electric plug attached.  The addition will be made to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada in Division 4 about guide and information signs.

The sign has already been adopted by the US Federal Highway Administration and harmonization between the US and Canada is a consideration when new traffic control devices are being developed. The sign will replace an older version in TAC’s Handbook of Recommended Information Sign Symbols for Canada.

The TOMSC plans additional work to develop tab options to indicate charging levels offered at the facility and to ensure currency as electric vehicle technology evolves.
