Modernizing the Tent Camp Sign in TAC’s MUTCDC

Thursday, February 22, 2018

The tent camp sign in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada will be updated as a result of a Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) volunteer project.

The tent camp sign (IC-4) informs drivers of a nearby tent camp facility. The symbol used in the sign has been modified to avoid it being mistaken for a teepee. A similar symbol is used in the U.S. Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

The IC-4 sign will also be modified in the Handbook of Recommended Information Sign Symbols for Canada, along with three other camping signs. The project was completed under the auspices of the Traffic Operations and Management Standing Committee, whose Editing and Publication Subcommittee will prepare the updates.

Background

This project tested the comprehension of existing campaign signs to determine if they needed to be modified.  There was some concern that the current symbol more closely resembles a First Nations teepee rather than a camping tent, and may be misinterpreted by travelers.
