Tuesday, November 1, 2016

At its September 2016 meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, the Council of the World Road Association (PIARC) elected its new Executive Committee for 2017-2020. Claude Van Rooten, Director General of the Belgian Road Research Centre, was elected President starting January 2017. Congratulations to Anne-Marie Leclerc, Assistant Deputy Minister, ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l’Électrification des transports, who was awarded the title of Honourary Member.

The Québec National Assembly unanimously adopted Bill 104, a zero-emission vehicle standard. Automakers that sell or lease a yearly average of more than 4,500 new vehicles (all light models combined) will be subject to the ZEV standard.  In its 2015-2020 Transportation Electrification Action Plan, Québec set a target of 100,000 registered plug-in vehicles by 2020. The bill gives the Government of Québec the powers it needs to require car manufacturers to sell a minimum of zero-emission vehicles through a tradable credit system.

Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario whose mandate is to coordinate transportation services in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area, has made #7 of Forbes Magazine list of Canada’s 25 best employers.

The engineering and architecture company Stantec has volunteered to partner with the City of Edmonton on a $20,000 study to create a minimum bike grid in its downtown core. The new grid could go in with temporary structures, to shorten construction timelines and let Edmonton residents weigh in on the design before permanent lines or barriers get installed.
