Duties

R.J. Burnside is seeking a Transportation Project Manager with 10 - 15 years of road design experience to join our expanding transportation team. This position can work out of our Newmarket or Mississauga office.

The successful candidate will generally work independently and will be the main point of contact with clients on a variety of Transportation projects and will also direct the internal workload and manage the financial aspects of projects.

The team focuses largely on road design across an extensive geography area. Projects are variable and range from small road improvements to large scale regional road improvements.  The team assists clients on projects from concept to completion.

The Role

Reporting to the Vice President, Transportation, this position includes directing a team of engineers, CETs, EITs, and other technical professionals and will involve (but is not limited to) carrying out the following tasks:

  • Supporting the Transportation Group in meeting client needs on projects, including maintaining ongoing client contact;
  • Leading the design implementation and day to day project coordination within overall project team;
  • Providing technical direction on functional, preliminary and detailed engineering designs for roadway design projects;
  • Leading / assisting with the preparation of cost estimates, tender packages and project documents;
  • Leading / assisting in project budgeting and preparation of proposals;
  • Ensuring quality and timely delivery of project deliverables to meet the client’s needs;
  • Establishing appropriate timelines for deliverables and work with design teams, throughout the offices, to drive the schedule;
  • Actively manage the project budgets and teams in order to complete projects within approved budgets;
  • Effectively manage project scope changes and proactively seek client approval of additional engineering fees as required;
  • Leading the QA/QC process for project deliverables and ensure they confirm with the overall Burnside QA/QC policy manual;
  • Working with other Project Managers, Senior Designers and CAD leaders to provide input to on-going process improvements for design output and project delivery;
  • Understanding and meeting client business objectives on projects;
  • Working with the leadership team on client and business development;
  • Providing training to junior and intermediate engineers and other technical staff;
  • Ensuring that learning opportunities are capitalized on;
  • Mentoring staff and participate actively and formally in their development plans;
  • Actively communicating with the project director and team members / leaders on project, workload and production status.

Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (P. Eng.), in good standing with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO)
  • 10 - 15 years of experience in transportation, road design and capital projects
  • Knowledge of Ministry of Transportation of Ontario and municipal design practices and permitting requirements
  • Experience with Municipal Class Environmental Assessments
  • Experience with design software including AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or MicroStation Inroads
  • Experience working as part of a project team in a collaborative consulting environment and within a
  • multi-office environment
  • Excellent interpersonal / team player, organizational and analytical skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
