Senior Traffic Operations Engineer

$72,879.68 - $95,682.25 annually plus 6.5% Recruitment and Retention Adjustment

The Transportation Systems and Road Safety Engineering group provides for the delivery of expert professional advice and multidisciplinary specialist support services in Electrical and Intelligent Traffic Systems Engineering, Highway Traffic Operations and Highway Safety throughout the province.  They are also responsible for ensuring that the Ministry is kept current in regard to engineering and technological developments and advancements related to traffic engineering standards, design, construction, maintenance and operations.

The Senior Traffic Operations Engineer is the expert to whom headquarters, regional, district and major projects staff look to for interpretation of policy, traffic engineering, traffic operations and highway safety solutions. Due to the scope and complexity of traffic and highway safety issues, exceptional professional judgment and initiative are expected. The incumbent is expected to manage and direct the work of contracted engineering consultants as well as engineering and technical staff performing traffic engineering assignments.  This position is responsible for making design mitigation recommendations as a professional engineer whose judgment is being relied upon by the general public to provide a safe and efficient road system. 

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree of Applied Science or a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. Preference may be given to candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree of Applied Science in Civil Engineering or a Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering in Civil Engineering, with courses in Traffic or Transportation Engineering.
  • Registered or immediately eligible* for registration as a fully qualified Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
  • *Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a professional Engineer in another Canadian jurisdiction, and able to transfer that membership to the EGBC within 6 months of employment. It is the responsibility of the applicant to have their qualifications reviewed by the appropriate body to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience working in Transportation Engineering. Preference may be given to candidates with minimum seven years of this experience.
