R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside) has an opening for a knowledgeable, result-driven and enthusiastic senior professional to help lead our transportation planning and engineering practice. The preferred candidate will be a specialist with expertise in transportation master plans, transportation modelling and micro-simulation, multi-modal transportation strategies and transportation environmental assessments with a strong desire to help build sustainable communities.


R.J. Burnside serves our clients with multiple offices; proximity to our clients allows us to experience their community needs and better develop infrastructure solutions.  The selected individual will work closely with the Senior Vice President and team members from various offices to further develop the public sector transportation planning practice.  The scope of work will include a range of transportation studies from municipal transportation master plans to corridor specific needs studies, for all modes of travel.  


The selected individual should be highly motivated and excel at working in a fast pace, adaptive and innovative environment.  They should be able to integrate into collaborative project teams and be able to manage competing priorities.

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Transportation, this position will be responsible for business development, proposal preparation, project management and delivery of projects in any of the following areas:


  • Transportation master plans and network planning studies;
  • Transportation class environmental assessment studies;
  • Travel demand forecasting / need and justification studies;
  • Transportation model development;
  • Transit ridership forecasting and route planning;
  • Community traffic plans;
  • Community parking demand and policy studies;
  • Active transportation planning;
  • Traffic micro-simulation; and
  • Traffic management plans.


As a senior professional within the organization, you will have responsibilities that include the following:

  • Lead or support project/client managers in establishing appropriate scope, budget and timelines for deliverables; and work with teams, throughout the offices, to implement delivery;
  • Ensure quality and timely delivery of project deliverables to meet the client’s needs;
  • Manage project financial performance and help manage team utilization;
  • Provide mentorship and training to a team of transportation planners, engineers and technical staff and participate actively and formally in their development plans;
  • Participate in the development of the annual business plan;
  • Assist in client development and prepare proposals; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Professional Knowledge & Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a transportation professional with a minimum of 12 to 15 years of experience with the following qualifications, experience and skills are required:

A registered professional engineer preferred;

Experience as a project manager for transportation master plans, class environmental assessment studies, municipality-wide strategic planning studies and municipal traffic operations studies;

A high level of expertise in a wide range of transportation planning and traffic engineering applications, including: demand forecasting software (e.g. EMME, TransCad), micro / meso traffic simulation software (e.g. Synchro, SimTraffic, and Vissim or Aimsum);

Excellent written and oral communication skills;

Strong analytical and data management skills;

Experience leading and mentoring staff teams;

Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite of programs;

Ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects concurrently; and

A valid Ontario driver’s license and vehicle.


The following experience and skills are considered additional assets:

  • Experience with traffic engineering including traffic safety audits and/or traffic signal design;
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or MicroStation Inroads for road design; and
  • Formal project management training, (PMP designation or similar)
