HDR has an opportunity for Bridge Class Lead/Senior Project Manager to lead and grow the HDR bridge practice for the Transportation Business Group in Canada. The Bridge group is involved in the pursuit and delivery of major transportation projects including large and complex bridges throughout Canada and has the ability to support HDR offices in the US. The Transportation Business Group comprises professional and technical experts in the highways, planning, transit, construction administration, bridges, traffic, facilities and rail disciplines.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Communicates with the Director and senior management to resolve issues and seek solutions;
  • Develops Business Class goals, objectives, policies strategic planning, budgeting and plan implementation;
  • Responsible for winning bridge & structural services;
  • Collaborates in developing client management plans for MTO, Municipal, Metrolinx and other key clients for both traditional and alternative delivery projects;
  • Takes responsibility for hiring, coordination, monitoring and improvement of technical competencies of business class staff to meet client needs and market drivers;
  • Prepares projections for the Bridge Services Class’s budget; submits the budget recommendation, and monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budget including utilization;
  • Directs, oversees, and participates in the development of the work plan, assign work activities, projects, and programs, monitors workflow, reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures;
  • Provides lead technical support and undertake technical analysis and design of highway bridges and other structures, including developing new methods and techniques, to complete complex or unique studies; this includes new design, load rating and rehabilitation of existing structures;
  • Attends meetings, serves on committees, and makes presentations as needed; participates on review committees, policy committees, safety committees, ad hoc committees;
  • Participates in delivery of project services to meet client expectations;
  • Participates in business class practice and professional discipline groups, project teams and activities to continually improve standards and best practices, and implement effective quality assurance and quality control reviews;
  • Produces, or manages the production of, design and construction documents for bridges from concept through construction.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and P. Eng and at least 15 years of experience in bridge projects;
  • Strong Ministry of Transportation and Municipal bridge experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience in successfully leading bridge projects under a Design Build or P3 alternative delivery projects;
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values and experienced in development and management of diverse teams;
  • Ability to manage complex technical work independently while mentoring and guiding team members
  • Must be able to work in a self-directed manner in all aspects of bridge design and document production process - may include development or review of design calculations; use and evaluation of design software; development of plans, specifications, quantities and cost estimates; writing of technical reports and support of construction phase services;
  • Preparation of reports, proposals, and other documentation for clients and review agencies
  • Ability to work to meet tight project schedules
  • Strong inter-personal relationship skills with the ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other employees, government officials, contractors, suppliers, and the general public -- using tact, patience and courtesy;
  • Committed to a high standard of safety
  • Proven abilities in effective management of projects and solid business development skills;
  • Must show the proven ability to develop and maintain clients and be viewed in the market as an expert in this field
