Eyes in the Sky: Using Drones for Structural Inspections

This webinar will examine activities and opportunities around the use of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS, or drones) in the inspection of bridges and other structures. Our presenters will address issues from licensing to possible applications, benefits and limitations, lessons learned, and several case studies from Western Canada.

Chris Schmelzle, P.Eng. - Bridge Project Manager, Associated Engineering
Chris is a registered bridge engineer working for Associated Engineering based in Edmonton, Alberta. He specializes in bridge management and inspections, and carries out bridge programs for a wide variety of public and private clients. He has used RPAS since 2018 to supplement bridge inspections on structures across the province.

Kamran Ata, P.Eng. - Structural Standards Engineer, Northwest Territories Department of Infrastructure
Kamran has worked with the Structures Section since 2010. His recent work has included development of the NWT’s bridge design manual, bridge engineering consultant’s guide and structures inspection standard operating procedures, as well as many individual bridge projects. He is the Secretary of TAC’s Structures Committee, and is actively involved with the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code.
