Climate Change Risk Assessment Process Project Launched

Wednesday, June 8, 2016

A project to develop a climate change risk assessment process and tool, launched by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC), will help transportation agencies determine risks to their infrastructure, services or operating practices related to climate change.

Climate change is forecasted to significantly increase in the coming decades and it is critical for owners and operators of transportation infrastructure to protect against the effects of more frequent severe weather events resulting from the change in climate.

Recommended by TAC’s Environmental Issues Management Standing Committee, key tasks of this project will include:

  • Review of the City of Toronto’s Climate Change Risk Assessment Tool (built on a MS Access platform) with respect to data availability and applicability;
  • Customize the risk assessment process and tool suitable for evaluating transportation infrastructure assets and services in Canada; and
  • Develop a user guide to enable agencies to easily understand and apply the proposed tool

The final deliverable of this project will be a nationally-applicable climate change risk assessment tool and an accompanying user guide for transportation agencies in Canada.

The project steering committee is finalizing its request for proposals and will select the project consultant in the coming months.

Funding partners for this project include Manitoba Infrastructure; Ministry of Transportation, Ontario; Prince Edward Island Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy; le ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l’Électrification des transports du Québec; Transport Canada; TransLink; Ville de Montréal; City of Toronto and Region of Durham.
