Using Municipal Vehicles as Sensor Platforms to Monitor the Health and Performance of the Traffic Control System

Monday, November 30, 2020 - 15:45

With the increasing availability of portable and low-cost automatic sensors that can be mounted on vehicles, this project was designed to investigate the potential of obtaining traffic data from sensors on municipal vehicles operating in the traffic streams as “mobile sensing platforms.” The public nature of municipal vehicle fleets would facilitate the collection and availability of the data for urban transportation planning and design. In addition, the size of some fleets would increase the spatial and temporal coverage of these mobile sensing platforms.  The report is available from the Carnegie Mellon University web site at https://ppms.cit.cmu.edu/media/project_files/Final_Report_-_76_2020.pdf
