Allan Widger Consulting Corporation Awards Grant for Young Geotechnical Engineers in Transportation

Tuesday, May 1, 2018

The Allan Widger Consulting Corporation Grant supports the attendance and participation of a young geotechnical engineer in transportation in the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) Conference & Exhibition, as well as the Association’s fall and spring technical meetings.

The grant provides up to $5000 to one young professional each year and will be awarded as a travel stipend (up to $3500 for the conference and up to $1500 for spring meetings).

Interested candidates should submit, by June 15, 2018, a résumé and one or two page letter summarizing work accomplishments, reasons for wanting to attend the TAC meetings and conference, and anticipated benefits.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, a candidate must:

  • Be no more than 35 years old as of December 31 in the year the grant is awarded;
  • Hold a graduate degree in Geotechnical (or equivalent) Engineering;
  • Be currently employed with at least three years of experience in the transportation field;
  • Commit to attend spring (April) and fall (September) technical meetings of the Pavements and Soils and Materials Standing Committees, and the TAC Conference and Exhibition (September/October);
  • Submit a one-page report, suitable for publication on TAC’s website/social media, with event highlights and comments about how participation may potentially benefit professional development.

Past grant recipients can re-apply but will be considered only if presenting in a session at the TAC conference.

Costs eligible for reimbursement, up to the fall $3500 / spring $1500 limit, are:

  • Conference registration (at TAC’s Young Professional rate)
  • Companion program registration
  • Travel costs (economy airfare/train/bus/car mileage) for grant recipient and companion
  • Ground transportation (to/from airport)

A selection committee will evaluate all applications and select the most suitable candidate. The selection committee reserves the right to not award the grant in any given year.
