Vice President, Alberta South District – AECOMCities are playing a larger role in the global economy, as more people migrate to the cities and away from rural communities. According to the McKinsey Global Institute, only 100 cities account for 30% of the global economy.
Developing a more integrated approach to planning and designing our cities and making better use of the rapidly changing technology will slow down the deterioration of our environment, mobility and quality of life. Urban growth puts a strain on our existing infrastructure (transportation network, utilities, communications) and our environment (air quality, water quality, social network). There is also a high cost associated with traffic congestion and collisions in all three areas of measurement (economic, environmental and social).
The smart use of innovative technology can help improve the efficiency of existing infrastructure, and identify gaps and bottlenecks in the system to improve operations, reliability, and safety services. Complex devices such as vehicle detectors, CCTV monitors, dedicated short range communication devices, global position satellite systems, road weather information systems, and red light camera systems measure the pulse of the road network. Mining the information from these systems can help analyze and manage the network in a more efficient, safe and timely fashion, through predictive analytics and artificial intelligence tools.
Technology is not the only solution. Urban planners and transportation planners must also integrate their efforts to develop plans that will provide opportunities for a safer and more efficient mobility.
Contact Stéphanie Simard, CITE’s Technical Representative, at ssimard@dillon.ca, to confirm your attendance. The registration fee for this session is $30.00 for members and $35.00 for non-members and can be paid on site prior to the luncheon.
