New Integrated Committee on Climate Change to Enhance TAC’s Work

Friday, July 8, 2016

With the successful conclusion of the mandate of the Climate Change Task Force (CCTF) in April 2016, the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC)’s Board of Directors has accepted a recommendation of the CCTF to restructure.

Building on the achievements of the CCTF, a new Integrated Committee on Climate Change (ICCC) will enhance the important focus on climate change in the work of the association and its members.

Formed in 2008, the CCTF has led the TAC community on the topic of climate change, resulting in a significant increase in awareness and activity by TAC committees on the subject.  A key outcome of the work of the CCTF, the climate change checklist provides valuable guidance to ensure that climate change is routinely considered when new TAC projects are undertaken.  Nearly 30 conference sessions directly related to climate change have been organized, and even more articles on the subject have been published in TAC News.  TAC’s Learning Program has delivered a number of webinars about climate change issues and initiatives in TAC member organizations.

Reporting to TAC’s councils, the new ICCC will provide a centre of expertise within TAC on climate change issues, adaptation, greenhouse gas reduction initiatives to mitigate climate change, and resilient transportation infrastructure and services.  Priorities will be to share information, integrate climate change-related work across TAC’s councils and committees, and take an active role in the development of guidelines and best practices pertaining to climate change.

Terms of reference for the new committee are currently being developed.

Membership on the ICCC will include individuals with expertise in climate change issues and representatives from TAC’s councils.  To guide the committee in its start-up period, Clark Gunter (WSP | MMM Group Limited) will serve as interim Chair.

The inaugural meeting of the ICCC will be held during TAC’s fall meetings (held in conjunction with the 2016 TAC Conference & Exhibition) in Toronto, Friday, September 23rd.  TAC members who have interest and expertise in climate change matters are encouraged to attend the meeting.
