MUTCDC Sixth Edition Project Launched

Tuesday, August 9, 2016

The Transportation of Association of Canada (TAC) has launched a project to develop the sixth edition of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC).

The Manual will offer guidance on traffic control device types, use, and placement for a variety of Canadian road authorities and jurisdictions.

This flagship publication is one of the most important documents for Canadian traffic engineering practitioners. A fifth edition was released in 2014, addressing updates and modifications that had been recommended since 2008, but it was not a full rewrite. The last complete rewrite of the Manual was done in 1998.

Recommended by TAC’s Traffic Operations and Management Standing Committee of the Chief Engineers’ Council, the objective of this project is to prepare a new edition of the MUTCDC. In addition to refreshing the entire Manual to ensure consistency in content, writing style and format, the project will involve specific updates for many sections as recommended in the MUTCDC update scoping study.

The accompanying Sign Pattern Manual will also be part of the major deliverables.

The project steering committee is finalizing its request for proposals and will select the project consultant this fall.

Funding partners for this project include Transport Canada, Alberta Transportation, British Columbia Transportation and Infrastructure, Manitoba Infrastructure, New Brunswick Transportation and Infrastructure, Newfoundland and Labrador Transportation and Works, Northwest Territories Department of Transportation, Nova Scotia Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, Ministry of Transportation, Ontario, Prince Edward Island Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy, le ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l’Électrification des transports du Québec, Saskatchewan Highways and Infrastructure, Yukon Highways and Public Works, the Halifax Regional Municipality, and the cities of Burlington, Calgary, Kelowna, Moncton, Montréal, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg.
