What can I expect to do in this role?

In this challenging role, you will

  • provide advanced engineering advice and guidance in bituminous materials engineering and technology,
  • support the ministry's construction and rehabilitation activities,
  • resolve complex technical issues,
  • carry out investigative projects and research to evaluate materials and technologies to determine, appropriateness and effectiveness for ministry programs, construction and maintenance/repair operations
  • write specifications, construction documents, reports, and make presentations,
  • implement new bituminous materials, related technologies, procedures and cost-effective improvements, to support effective design, construction and maintenance,
  • supervise technical staff.

Qualifications

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

You are licensed by the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

Engineering Knowledge and Analytical Skills

  • You have progressive engineering experience, specifically in asphalt pavement materials, pavement design, construction and evaluation.
  • You know up-to-date asphalt materials technology.
  • You understand asphalt pavement material issues, policies, test procedures, current asphalt mix design requirements, standards and specifications, and normal construction practices for paving work.
  • You have knowledge and demonstrated experience of the theory, principles, practices and analytical methods for asphalt pavement materials and technologies related to material and pavement design, testing, construction, and maintenance operations.
  • You know pertinent ministry standards, specifications and special provisions, national and international protocols.
  • You have knowledge of the relationship between asphalt pavement materials, material characterization, construction and performance.
  • You can provide effective direction for studies, investigations, and pilot projects of new processes, materials and equipment.
  • You can identify cause and effect relationships and bring about resolution.
  • You can effectively deal with complex technical issues that are industry and public sensitive.

Leadership and Communication Skills

• You can provide technical supervision and leadership to engineering staff in achievement of section goals, priorities and functional work plans.
• You can use excellent communication, interpersonal, consultative and negotiation skills for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
• You can connect with a wide range of audiences, including senior management, colleagues, industry stakeholders, associations, academia and technical committees.
• You can write reports to publication standards.
• You can represent the ministry both verbally and using written formats, internally and externally on technically and administrative topics that may be politically sensitive or that may have a major impact on industry.

Project Management

  • You can use your skills to evaluate, develop and implement asphalt pavement material and/or construction processes.
  • You can research and solve problems related to laboratory evaluation, testing, implementation, material and/or pavement performance issues.

Salary Range: $82,569 - $117,373 per year
