Federal Bridge Corporation Limited

Duties

The Federal Bridge Corporation (Federal Bridge Corporation Limited) is a parent Crown corporation and agent of the Crown headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is incorporated under the Canada Business Corporations Act and is subject to the Financial Administration Act (FAA). It has a mandate to engage in a range of activities to ensure that the international bridges and related infrastructure in its portfolio are safe, secure, efficient, environmentally sound and well-maintained, in accordance with the International Bridges and Tunnels Act.

The Federal Bridge Corporation’s portfolio currently includes Canadian interests in:

  • The Blue Water Bridge in Point Edward, Ontario;
  • The Seaway International Bridge (SIB) in Cornwall, Ontario;
  • The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and;
  • The Thousand Islands Bridge at Lansdowne, Ontario.

In support of these operations, the Federal Bridge Corporation’s activities include the design, construction, financing maintenance, operation, management or development of international bridges or other affiliated structures or facilities as well as maintaining a good working relationship with owners of the United States interests in these bridges.

The Board of Directors is responsible for the Federal Bridge Corporation’s business activities and other affairs. It discharges its responsibility by way of oversight of the Federal Bridge Corporation in a manner that is fully consistent with its fiduciary duty and duty of care.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study, or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, job-related training or experience;
  • A professional financial designation in accounting or a related field would be considered an asset;
  • Experience serving as a member of a board of directors for a public or private sector organization or as a senior executive answerable to stakeholders in the public or private sector;
  • Experience in dealing with senior representatives of government or the private sector;
  • Experience in the transportation sector or business community; and
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: transportation industry; enhancing customer experience; community engagement; public policy; trade; logistics; and infrastructure revitalization.

If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of FBCL’s mandate, mission, strategic priorities, and business activities;
  • Knowledge of the role and responsibilities of a board member, including fundamental accountabilities to the Government of Canada as a shareholder;
  • Knowledge of the public policy environment facing a Crown corporation, and a general understanding of the legislative environment in which it operates, including the Financial Administration Act;
  • Knowledge of strategic corporate planning, monitoring, and evaluation of corporate performance;
  • Knowledge of corporate governance including good governance principles and best practices;
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: law; labour relations; public policy; media or communications; pension plan administration or governance; pension plan investment; client services or marketing; and community engagement, including indigenous leadership and local or regional government;
  • Financial literacy;
  • Ability to anticipate emerging issues; and
  • Strong communications skills, both written and oral.

Language Proficiency

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.
