Urban Systems is one of Canada’s leading active transportation planning and design firms.  Our growing active transportation practice is seeking an experienced and passionate junior to intermediate Active Transportation Planner to join our team to help create vibrant communities where walking and cycling are convenient and attractive mobility choices for people of all ages and abilities. This position is a one-year temporary position to cover a maternity leave with the possibility of an extension depending on needs.

Active transportation is one of Urban Systems’ core areas of expertise and specialization within our multi-modal transportation practice. We have been working to create walkable and bikeable communities throughout Canada for over 25 years. We take projects through all aspects of the design process, from long-range planning through to conceptual and detailed design.  We also offer a wide range of specialized services, including innovative Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based analysis and modelling, design guidelines, training and professional development, safety analysis, bicycle parking, and safe routes to school, among others.  

The growing demand created by our strength in providing innovative solutions in active transportation has prompted our search for a talented and motivated junior to intermediate Active Transportation Planner to join our team in Vancouver.  We are looking for an individual who is excited about the opportunity to help support our active transportation practice across Canada, with a particular emphasis on active transportation planning and design.  In the role of a junior to intermediate Active Transportation Planner, you will have the opportunity to support and participate in a variety of projects for clients across Canada.


Given the variety of project needs and a desire to find the right person to fit with our practice vision, we will consider candidates with a range of experience, education and background in active transportation.  Typical qualifications would include a degree in Urban Planning with an emphasis on active transportation.  In addition, the following attributes would be considered of great benefit to this role:
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience in transportation planning with a specific emphasis on active transportation planning 
  • Experience developing long-range active transportation plans and designing pedestrian and bicycle facilities for communities of all sizes.  
  • Understanding of how pedestrian and bicycle facilities work within a multi-modal framework, with experience in complete streets, urban street design, parking, and transit.  
  • Experience in planning and designing other multi-modal systems (urban streets, highways, and transit)
  • Familiarity with both national design guidelines and international best practices in bicycle and pedestrian facility design, including NACTO, CROW, and other leading international design guides. 
  • Experience working with the public and stakeholders.
  • A solid understanding of processes, rules and regulations related to active transportation planning and design in Canada.
  • Professional practice experience working in a consulting environment, including a demonstrated ability to deliver on multiple assignments in a dynamic and fast paced environment
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently  
  • Effective communication skills including both written and verbal
