Four Interactive Workshops Scheduled For 2016 TAC Conference

Four interactive workshops are part of the upcoming Transportation Association of Canada’s (TAC) 2016 Conference & Exhibition at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, September 25-28.

Participants will be able to broaden their perspectives and learn more about the science of road safety; roundabout design in the Toronto region; safety and active transportation; and getting ready for connected and automated vehicles.

Delegates are encouraged to select their workshops when registering for the conference and check the preliminary program to help plan their schedule of concurrent sessions, and technical tours. The conference detailed program will be posted in August.

How Industry Professionals Can Apply the Science of Road Safety in Canada – September 26, 13:45-17:15

State-of-art analytical tools have been developed to identify the most collision-prone locations. Collision modification factors have been assembled outlining the expected effectiveness of various infrastructure treatments. In combination, these tools afford practitioners new opportunities to undertake targeted investigations, and to develop optimized solutions and cost-effective funding allocation strategies.  

Presented by TAC’s Road Safety Standing Committee, this workshop led by industry experts will help participants learn how to make a meaningful difference in the daily lives of motorists, active transportation users, construction and maintenance workers, and the general public using the science of road safety. Participants will gain an appreciation of the systemic and integrated approaches involved in the application of road safety guiding principles through hands-on exercises and round table discussion.     

Roundabout Design (off site workshop) – September 27, 07:00-12:00

Presented by TAC’s Geometric Design Standing Committee, this workshop will travel to the Region of Waterloo, and cover roundabout implementation, feasibility and design, safety performance and operational challenges. Once the bus has reached its destination, participants will visit up to six roundabouts, from single lane to three-lane roundabouts and one or more roundabout corridors. The return trip will include a wrap-up discussion and look to the future of roundabout implementation.

Safety and Active Transportation – FULL DAY WORKSHOP – September 27, 08:30-17:15

Presented by TAC’s Road Safety Standing Committee, this full day workshop will focus on challenges and opportunities in active transportation safety prioritization and tools. Toronto's recent road safety plan will be introduced, with a particular focus on geospatial prioritization and safety countermeasure selection. Experts will also highlight best practices and key issues for cycling and pedestrian safety based on the experience and examples in Vancouver and Calgary, among other cities. Participants will be able to apply their road safety knowledge in developing pedestrian and cycling safety solutions to sample locations in urban and suburban Toronto. A tour of key sites in Toronto will enhance the experience by highlighting specific challenges and opportunities.  

Connected and Automated Vehicles – How Can Canada Get Ready? – September 28, 08:30-12:00

The transportation sector is undergoing a period of transformative change as a result of increased connectivity and automation. On-road connected vehicle and automated vehicle systems are creating new possibilities within the road transportation sector. They promise to improve safety and security; enhance efficiency, mobility and accessibility; reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption; and, foster innovative economic opportunities for advanced clean technology jobs and investments in Canada.

Presented by TAC’s Traffic Operations and Maintenance Standing Committee, this workshop will feature presentations by local and international experts on the anticipated safety, efficiency and mobility benefits of connected and automated vehicle technologies, their current status and commercialization time frames. Lessons learned from CV pilot deployments in North America will be discussed, as well as the impact of these technologies on Canadian municipalities and transportation authorities, and how to maximize the benefits.
