Flashing Sequence for Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons

Wednesday, June 22, 2016

The wig-wag and simultaneous flashing sequence for rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB) has been approved for inclusion in the next edition of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC) by the Transportation Association of Canada’s (TAC) Chief Engineers’ Council.

The sequence was brought forward for approval by the Traffic Operations and Management Standing Committee.

These pedestrian-activated traffic installations warn drivers of the presence of a pedestrian in the crosswalk. The device consists of two rapidly and alternately flashed amber indications emitting LED-array based pulsing light sources.

The guidance and details about the timing sequence of RRFBs will be added to section B3.2.5 of TAC’s MUTCDC as a traffic control pedestrian crossing device. These side-mounted installations are used at marked and signed pedestrian or school crosswalks, and roundabouts.

Additional information about the research on RRFB flashing sequence can be obtained by contacting Glenn Cole at the TAC Library.
