Designing Climate Resilient Transportation Infrastructure

This webinar provides participants with important considerations, knowledge and tools to design climate resilient, efficient and effective transportation infrastructure. Character, magnitude and rate of change of climate and extreme weather events all need to be considered in designing and building transportation infrastructure. The webinar will also present case studies and best practices for adaptation, as well as an overview of the British Columbia Transportation and Infrastructure Technical Circular.

Dirk Nyland, Chief Engineer, British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure
Since 2008, Dirk has been championing climate change and adaptation initiatives for ministry transportation engineering.  He was actively involved with the development of a climate risk evaluation tool through Engineers’ Canada Public Infrastructure Engineering Vulnerability Committee (PIEVC), and was Chair of the PIEVC Roads and Associated Structures Expert Working Group.  Dirk provides training sessions on the PIEVC protocol across the country and has developed a collaborative working relationship with the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium at the University of Victoria involving their climate modeling expertise. This lead author of the BC chapter of a national review of climate change and adaptation measures recently instituted a Technical Circular for BCMoTI to incorporate climate change and extreme weather into transportation engineering design.
